A quick look at our current openings for industrial chemists shows at least 47 positions currently needing filled by our specialists! And, as if that isn’t enough good news, a recent article in C&EN (Chemical and Engineering News) detailed the upswing in hiring taking place in the industry.

The economic downturn that started in late 2007 led to thousands of jobs in all industries going away over the next several years. By 2013, however, the job market had begun improving.  The chemical manufacturing segment saw a 1.2% increase in total employment. That’s the highest employment in this field (792,600) since 1998.  Chemical manufacturing employment is on track to rise another 1.1% this year and 0.2% in 2015.

Driving the upswing in employment in the chemical industry is the healthier state of U.S. manufacturing in general. After all, most of the chemical industry’s products end up in the manufacturing sector at some point.

Also, use of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques to exploit previously untapped underground shale deposits in North America—along with the discovery of additional reserves—has resulted in a large volume of low-cost natural gas as well as natural gas liquids (NGLs), including ethane. These resources have proven a game changer as inexpensive feedstocks and fuel for the U.S. chemical industry.
